El-Sombrero Review

Over on the West Side of Grand Rapids (my side of town) there are several Mexican resturaunts. One of my favorites for late night fast and easy dining is El Sombrero, located at 527 Bridge St NW. There are a couple other places around Bridge st. that are better, but El sombrero is the best for easy in and out no hassle fast Mexican food.

They have the standard fare, tostatada, echiladas, etc…

But the one thing they have that is really good are the Pescado (fish) tacos.

I stopped in last week to get a quick bite, and ordered the combination plate.

The combination plate costs $7.50, and is pricier than other combination plates in the area, but it tastes just better enough to be worth it.

They also have some of the best hot sauce for a Mexcan fast food joint.

Never order the chips and cheese.

Madcap Coffee

I finally made it to Madcap Coffee downtown.

I was really blown away by how swanky the place is on the inside.

So sleek and minimal. The place really gets away from the average coffee shop that caters to college kids hunched over laptops nursing one latte. They also played a variety of pretty good music; Bon Iver, Sigur Ros, Man-Man, and MGMT were just some of the bands that shuffled through the sound system.

I was there with a friend, Adam, and we had a pint of their slow brewed coffee.

The coffee was pretty good, but dont rely on me, I do not have a refined pallette when it comes to coffee. I can drink just about anything. I just need the caffeine. BUT, it was really nice presentation. It came on a board.

Madcap also offers some pretty good views of the art museum.

Overall, a pretty good place. It looks pretentious, but it was not. I highly recommend spending an evening in there.
