Finishing Projects

It feels so good to finish a project and get the finished, final piece in your hands. In the last couple weeks I have completed two different projects.

Here is the first; a book prepared for use as a syllabus for a concepting class at Kendall College of Art & Design.

yes, I did the grid myself

Reading

I like books. I like turning pages, I like seeing the design up close, I like looking at the type, I like inspecting the materials made. More importantly I like the information in books. I usually buy books and I have forgotten about the library.

I will be doing a lot of reading.

What a coincidence; right before I was going to post this I saw this post

Emory Douglas – Arkitip Intelligence

But anyway, I bought this book a while ago, and I absolutely love it.

Tour of my office

For no particular reason, I felt like giving you a tour of my office.

I do work son!

Where the magic happens

My autographed (Patton Oswalt, Maria Bamford, Doug Benson, Brian Posehn and Eugene Merman)poster from Comedians of Comedy Tour and another poster that I really love that my friend Matt gave me.

Paintings using Krink ink

wall of inspiration

Frank Kozik Dunny

This is where the concepts go for testing and revision (sorry, I had to blur things. I can’t just be showing work until its done.)

What am I working on now? This:

Could this project become a reality? I don’t know. It’s a long shot as it stands now. It has always been a long shot. But seriously, as they say, it was just an honor to be asked.

I am sort of half-joking by posting this. I mean, the information is real, but I would not have posted this if my “obsession” with jeffstaple hadn’t become a joke with several of my friends.

So here it is.

jeffstaple joins Arkitip Intelligence

Just another way for me to follow the life of jeffstaple.

A lesson in proofing

I can hardly believe this, but a poster went all the way to print and even (gasp) into circulation with an error. It bypassed at least two people who should of caught it (one of them being me).

PROOF YOUR WORK! It is easy to rush something out, I know, you need to get somewhere, you need to start another project, etc.. But don’t rely on the other person to catch mistakes, assume they won’t. Because sometimes, just like you, they won’t. Check it five times if you have to.

I have learned from this experience, and it won’t happen again.

Letterpress Bookmark

At the Grand Rapids Public Museum they have an old timey print shop with a letterpress that was built in 1880.

(sorry for the blurry iPhone pics)

printing plates

They print these bookmarks with a brief history of printing.

It is amazing what people had to do back then to print, many things I take for granted with my nice Macbook.

If you are in Grand Rapids I recommend that you visit the print shop in the museum M-F 10am-3pm.
